Interhelp Gathering, November 9-11, 2007


This is an example of an exercise at an Interhelp Gathering. This is from Elise Elise Boulding's Envisioning the World We Want to Live In exercise. Various groups envisioned the world in the year 2027, and then created these timelines of what happened in the years 2007 - 2027 to create this world. Here are the timelines:

A.

  • Worldwide, women get education 2027

  • Corporate personhood ends

  • Global peace force established

  • “LOIS” beats “TINA”: local living economies dominate

  • Real cost pricing with point-of-sale-feedback

  • Tax and subsidy shifts: jobs, education, transportation, military, agriculture, healthcare

  • Power with—not power over

  • Education values cooperation over competition

  • Global unified voice of indigenous people

  • Massive renewable energy projects and conservation

  • Oil=$300 barrel

  • Global boycott of U.S. corporations

  • New president 2007-2008


B.

  • 2027: All city transportation by non-fossil fuel means

  • 2022: Regions rely primarily on locally grown food

  • 2022: Comprehensive rail service

  • 2017: Huge reduction in auto use and huge reduction in animals as food and use of permaculture and remediation of natural world gains momentum; government responsive to the people.

  • 2012: Agricultural petrochemicals finished; WPA type projects for transportation and energy infrastructures; universal health care; redesign of education focus toward living skills and culture; develop knowledgeable work force about energy and food production—includes apprenticeships; carbon allowance per citizen; allows carbon trading; we are known for our energy and climate change leadership.

  • 2008: No one votes; abolish electoral college; migration from suburbs to city and farmers to country begins; farmers markets and seasonal eating established; mandatory relocalization of media; accountable corporate taxation and carbon tax for industry; incorporation of Great Turning into mainstream culture.

  • 2007: Oil prices go way up


C.


  • 2022: Industrial plants eliminated

  • 2020: Dismantle interstate highways

  • 2019: Restoration/CO 2 removal; guardianship projects underway employing millions worldwide.

  • 2018: Transparency in government.

  • 2017: Electoral college gone; UN Security Council abolished; all nuclear plants decommissioned; weapons abolished.

  • 2016: Proportional voting established state by state; ancient spiritual practices revived.

  • 2015: Financial priorities reflect regional sustainability initiatives; practices developed for problem solving and decision making; nonviolent educational processes begin to achieve prevalence.

  • 2014: Lobbyists banned; term limits; politicians become true public servants; campaigns become publicly financed.

  • 2013: Taxpayer refusal leads to 20% reduction in military expenditures and money is redirected to educating and building sustainable institutions.

  • 2012: Fossil fuels eliminated for transportation; breakthrough transportation technologies become widespread.

  • 2011: Corporate personhood revoked/nullified; only allowed to operate if they serve the public good.

  • 2009: CSAs increase and break corporate stranglehold on agriculture.


D.


  • 2027: Cooperation has replaced competition as basic mode; celebration of goals of the social forum movements.

  • 2022: Bolivarian circles have penetrated all civic life.

  • 2020: Every corporation of over 15 has a renewable charter every 15 years covering the triple bottom line.

  • 2017: All schools have non-violent conflict resolution training.

  • 2015: Military budget rechanneled into meeting basic human needs, alternative energy; resolution of all major conflicts in the Middle East.

  • 2012: Dismantling of all nuclear weapons and all foreign bases.

  • 2010: Ushering in of single-payer health care.

  • 2008: Campaign of financial reform—media free of charge; large scale popular movements uprising.

  • 2007: Explosion of “work circles” groups sharing work projects; dismantling of U.S. Empire—U.S. takes leadership for alternative international structures.
